Lakewood : Lease for Stable Studied

Share

After two years of searching for a concessionaire to take over operation of the city-run Lakewood Stables, the City Council voted 3-2 last week to delay approval of a lease with a local stable owner until Tuesday’s council meeting.

With council members Marc Titel and Jacqueline Rynerson dissenting, the council requested more time to study a proposal submitted by Sandie Mercer Stables Inc. of Long Beach. The proposal includes riding lessons, pony rides and a petting zoo at the stables at River Park near the San Gabriel River.

“The council had some questions about whether Mercer Stables would be able to provide some of the things outlined in their proposal,” said Titel, who along with Rynerson made up the council’s equestrian center ad hoc committee, which has been studying the proposal for the past few months.

Titel said he felt confident that Mercer Stables, which has been operating an equestrian center in Long Beach for more than 30 years, would be able to provide the services outlined in its proposal.
