Peace Day Activities in Southland

Share

While world religious leaders gather on Monday in the Italian city of Assisi to pray for peace with Pope John Paul II, Southern California will observe its own ecumenical Peace Day with Los Angeles Archbishop Roger M. Mahony.

Local religious leaders will meet privately with the Roman Catholic archbishop in Malibu for several hours of reflection on peace and then hold a ceremony at 1:25 p.m. to launch a symbolic “peace wreath” into the Pacific Ocean.

On Sunday, an interdenominational “peace concert” will be held at 3 p.m. in St. Vibiana’s Cathedral in downtown Los Angeles. A combined chorus from local Catholic, Lutheran, Methodist, Episcopal and Mormon congregations will sing Ralph Vaughn Williams’ cantata, “Dona Nobis Pacem.”
