Washington tuned up for a showdown at Arizona State by rolling past Oregon, 38-3, in the rain Saturday at Seattle.

Husky Coach Don James and some of his players were less than satisfied, however. James complained about Washington’s 9 penalties for 97 yards.

“If I had any criticism at all, it would be the way we stopped ourselves,” James said. “It was unbelievable. If we don’t play better than that in a close game, those mistakes will be critical.”

Quarterback Chris Chandler, who completed 13 of 24 passes for 109 yards, ran for two touchdowns and passed for a third.

“We didn’t let up after we got the lead, but we got mentally sluggish and didn’t execute,” said Chandler, who scored on runs of nine yards in the first quarter and six yards in the fourth quarter. He passed one yard to tight end Rod Jones for a touchdown in the third period.

The Huskies’ fourth straight victory gave them a 6-1 overall record, 3-1 in the Pacific 10. The Ducks, losing their sixth straight, are 2-6 and 0-5.

Washington, ranked No. 8, faces No. 9 Arizona State, the Pac-10 leader, at Tempe, Ariz., next Saturday.

Washington handed James his 99th coaching victory with the Huskies to tie Jim Owens’ school victory record.

Washington rolled up 423 yards, 305 on the ground, to 124 for Oregon. The Ducks were held to 31 yards rushing.

Chandler, a junior, ran 8 times for 48 yards.

Chris Miller, Oregon’s senior quarterback, failed to surpass Dan Fouts’ 14-year school record of 5,995 yards. Miller completed 10 of 22 passes for 93 yards and was intercepted once, leaving him 66 yards short of Fouts’ mark.

Bothered by a heavy rush all day, Miller was sacked 4 times for 31 yards. Inside linebacker David Rill had 14 tackles for the Huskies, including a 9-yard sack of Miller.

Oregon Coach Rich Brooks said Miller was less than 100% after he jammed his neck in the first half.

Arizona 33, California 16--At Tucson, Ariz., Alfred Jenkins threw for one touchdown and ran for another, and tailback David Adams carried 26 times for 124 yards as the 15th-ranked Wildcats improved to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the Pac-10.

Jenkins completed 8 of 17 passes for 169 yards and was intercepted twice. Derek Hill caught 6 of Jenkins’ passes for 142 yards, including a 37-yarder for a touchdown. Paced by Adams’ performance, the Wildcats amassed 201 yards rushing.

Cal, which fell to 1-6 and 1-3, was held to 43 yards rushing and 213 overall.

Freshman Gary Coston kicked three field goals for Arizona to extend to 15 his school record for consecutive field goals.

Arizona St. 52, Utah 7--Darryl Harris scored three times while rushing for 165 yards, and Jeff Van Raaphorst tied a school record for pass completions as the ninth-ranked Wildcats stayed unbeaten with a victory over the Utes at Tempe, Ariz.

Van Raaphorst, a senior quarterback, completed 9 passes in 12 attempts for 88 yards to increase his career total to 405 completions, tying the ASU record established by Mike Pagel in 1981.

Harris, a senior tailback, scored on runs of 10, 1 and 2 yards for the Sun Devils (6-0-1). Harris carried 22 times in posting the best rushing total of his career. His previous best was 145 yards last month in a 21-21 tie against Washington State.

Utah (0-6) scored its only touchdown on Eddie Johnson’s 67-yard run off a misdirection play with 7:11 remaining in the second quarter.

Oregon St. 34, Boise St. 3--Sophomore quarterback Erik Wilhelm set a school passing record as the Beavers romped to a nonconference victory over Boise State at Corvallis, Ore.

Wilhelm completed 13 of 26 passes for 208 yards and a touchdown before yielding to backup Dave McLaughlin in the fourth quarter on a damp afternoon at Parker Stadium.

Wilhelm, who led the NCAA with an average of 26.8 completions per game before Saturday, has 1,755 yards passing this season with four games to play. That breaks the record of 1,738, set by Heisman Trophy winner Terry Baker in 1962.

Maury Moore had two interceptions for the Broncos. The first, with 5:50 to play in the first quarter, ended Wilhelm’s streak of 126 passes without an interception, 17 short of the Pac-10 record.

Oregon State, 1-3 in conference play, is 2-5 overall. Boise State of the Big Sky Conference, is 4-3 overall.
