‘Dealing With a Deadlock’

I support President Reagan’s position on Star Wars. Every major technological change has been actively resisted. The railroad, telegraph, telephone, radio, airplane, television, electronics and nuclear energy have all been attacked as pipe dreams, impossible and dangerous.

If we had not been in the forefront of those developments other peoples would have, and we would be struggling to catch up. If an idea can be proposed and defined man will eventually build it. The only unknowns in SDI are the cost in time and treasure and the benefits and problems it will bring. We cannot afford to ignore or try to suppress it.

If we don’t explore and probably develop it, our opponents will. This change is different than the others. There will be no time to “struggle to catch up.”

I’m not an apologist for Ronald Reagan. In fact I wholeheartedly disagree with the belligerent attitude he displays in pursuit of his foreign policy and his wrongheaded approach in Central America. I hopefully look forward to the “peaceful” end of his term in office.
