A request by the Central Intelligence Agency to use Los Angeles police investigators as temporary CIA agents for counterterrorism operations abroad has been rejected, department officials said. The CIA reportedly has asked 18 major municipal police agencies, including New York and Los Angeles, for assistance in enlisting experienced investigators for the temporary assignments. But Lt. Dan Cooke, a department spokesman, said the Police Department “is not in the business of recruiting for other agencies. We are not recruiting for the CIA.” Commanders of the Police Department’s Organized Crime and Anti-Terrorist divisions confirmed that none of their officers has present or intended CIA ties. New York police officials, meanwhile, reportedly have cooperated with the CIA recruitment effort. Sixty-eight New York police investigators reportedly have taken an eight-hour examination as the first screening step in CIA hiring.
