A Pentagon directive aimed at restricting participation by soldiers in the Ku Klux Klan or neo-Nazi groups is too broad and violates the Constitution, the American Civil Liberties Union said. The memorandum by Defense Secretary Caspar W. Weinberger for the first time authorizes commanders to discharge a member of the military, if necessary, for activities related to participation in so-called “hate” or white supremacist groups.
