West L.A. Power Failure Affects 18 ‘Major Users’
A power failure hit scattered locations in West Los Angeles Tuesday evening, trapping three people--one for more than two hours--in separate elevators in the high-rise Barrington Plaza Apartments on Wilshire Boulevard.
No injuries were reported.
A Department of Water and Power spokesman said the outage resulted from problems in a 34,500-volt underground line and affected 18 “major users” in an area from Beverly Glen Boulevard to the Santa Monica city limit.
Most of the customers affected were office buildings and markets, the spokesman said, and DWP crews went to the buildings to switch their power supply to alternate circuits.
During the blackout, one tenant at the Barrington Plaza, former UCLA basketball star Lynn Shackleford, said he was spending the time reading by candlelight.
“That’s all there is to do,” he said.
