The Chargers, needing insurance at quarterback, turned to an ex-Charger Tuesday. Bruce Mathison, who played two years for the Chargers before being waived in 1985, was signed as a backup for Tom Flick, the third-string quarterback who will start Sunday against Kansas City at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.

Dan Fouts is listed as doubtful and Mark Herrmann questionable to doubtful for Sunday’s game. Fouts suffered a concussion Oct. 19. Herrmann, who started for Fouts last week, suffered a concussion and was replaced by Flick.

Mathison completed 3 of 5 passes for 41 yards and an interception in one game with the Chargers in 1983. He played in two games the next season, but didn’t attempt a pass.
