A Burbank man who said he accidentally shot his 14-month-old daughter in the leg has been arrested and charged with child endangering, police said.

Brijido Rodriquez, 19, told authorities that he was trying to open the cylinder of the .38-caliber handgun about 5 p.m. Tuesday at his home on Valley Heart Street when it fired, said Lt. Art Moody. The bullet struck Rodriquez’s daughter in the lower left leg as she sat on a bed watching television, he said.

Rodriquez took the toddler to St. Joseph Medical Center, where hospital officials called Burbank police, Moody said. The child, whose name was not released, was later transferred to Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena and was listed in fair condition on Wednesday .

Moody said Rodriquez was arrested and jailed because he appeared to be under the influence of cocaine. Police searched the home and confiscated two handguns and a rifle, he said.

Several hours after his arrest, Rodriquez was released on $28,000 bail.
