Angels’ Himes to Be Named White Sox General Manager

Larry Himes, scouting director of the Angels since 1980, will be named general manager of the Chicago White Sox at a press conference in Chicago today.

Himes was one of two finalists for a job vacated recently by Ken Harrelson. The other finalist was Lee Thomas, personnel director of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Reached at his Fullerton home before taking an afternoon flight to Chicago on Wednesday, Himes said he has received a multiyear contract from the White Sox but was reluctant to discuss specifics.

“All I can say is that I’m very excited,” Himes said. “If you’re in my end of the business, there’s only two real jobs to have. One of them is scouting, the job I’m giving up, and the other is the job I’m taking, where you’re in charge of the entire baseball operation. Only a few people get this chance.”

Angel General Manager Mike Port said there would be no immediate announcement of a successor to Himes.
