Bruin Soccer Tournament Matches 2 Contenders for Top College Award

Two rivals for the Hermann Award, the college soccer equivalent of the Heisman Trophy, will be featured this weekend in the second annual Metropolitan Life Pacific Classic at UCLA.

All-American John Kerr of Duke, the Atlantic Coast Conference’s top scorer, and UCLA All-American defender Paul Caligiuri will be matched against each other Sunday, the tournament’s final day.

In Saturday’s opening pairings, Duke (11-4-1) will face Cal State Los Angeles (4-7-2) at noon, and the Bruins (11-0-5) will meet New Mexico (11-5) at 2 p.m. at the North Athletic Soccer Field. On Sunday, the Diablos go against New Mexico at noon, and the Blue Devils face UCLA at 2. Tickets are $4 for adults and $2 for ages 16 and younger. As the week began, Kerr, second on Duke’s career scoring list, was the ACC’s top scorer with 12 goals and 13 assists for 37 points.

Last week the Bruins, defending NCAA champions, extended their school-record unbeaten streak to 33 games by defeating American University, 6-0, and 1984 NCAA titlist Clemson, 3-0, to win the Clemson tournament. Last year American extended UCLA to a record eight overtimes before the Bruins won the NCAA final, 1-0.

UCLA freshman midfielder Lucas Martin, who scored three goals and an assist at Clemson, was named the tourney’s outstanding offensive player, and four other Bruins made the all-tournament team: Caligiuri and defender Eric Biefeld, forward Jeff Hooker and goalkeeper Anton Nistl.

Before each day’s matches there will be two free soccer clinics for youth at 10:30 a.m.

Pepperdine water polo coach Terry Schroeder says that unbeaten Stanford, ranked first in the nation and defending NCAA champion, is the team to beat this season and that the Waves just may turn the trick.

That would be suitable for their Halloween meeting at 3 p.m. Friday at Pepperdine’s Raleigh Runnels Pool in Malibu.

Schroeder said that, though Stanford (25-0) is formidable, his No. 5 Waves (18-6), who have won 11 of their last 12, “have been playing excellent water polo, so I think we have a great chance at winning.”

Last week Pepperdine remained unbeaten (8-0) in the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. and one game ahead of UC Irvine by routing Pacific, 15-6, and downing Fresno State, 12-9, on the road.

The Waves will play a PCAA match against Cal State Fullerton at noon Saturday at Fullerton’s Independence Park Pool.

The No. 8 UCLA women’s volleyball team, tied for first with Stanford in the Pac-10 Conference, will be on the road this weekend for conference matches at Arizona State on Friday night and at Arizona on Sunday.

The Bruins, 21-7 overall and 9-1 in the Pac 10, defeated both Arizona schools this season. Against Arizona State (17-4, 8-3), UCLA won in four games, but in its only loss suffered the first shutout in the team’s history, 15-0. UCLA defeated Arizona (11-7, 6-5) in three games.

The Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount women’s volleyball teams, in a three-way tie with U.S. International for first place in the West Coast Athletic Conference, will clash next week after each plays host to conference foes Santa Clara and USF.

The No. 16 Waves (13-11 and 5-1) will play host to the Lions (17-6, 5-1) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu.

Pepperdine will entertain Santa Clara (14-14, 2-4) at 7:30 p.m. Friday and USF (1-5, 6-18) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Loyola meets USF at 7:30 p.m. Friday and the Broncos at 7:30 p.m. Saturday (11-1).

Last week the Waves lost a non-conference match to No. 11 Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in five games, swept in three against WCAC foe San Diego and lost in four games to USIU. The Lions last week got by USIU in five games and then downed San Diego in three.

Loyola junior Cathy Petrissans had 31 kills last week, and her sophomore teammate, Leslie Wohlford, had 27 kills and 21 digs in the two matches.

Julie Evans, Pepperdine junior outside hitter, is leading the Waves with 394 kills, a hitting percentage of .283, 34 service aces and 217 digs.

The UCLA women’s swim team, which opened the season by winning every event in a 126-76 victory over UC Santa Barbara, will play host to the Mission Viejo Swim Club at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center pool on campus.

Double winners for UCLA were junior diver Andy Littlefield with a 240.10 at one meter and a 267.45 at three meters and freshman Melissa Herndon in the 800 freestyle in 9:07.94 and the 200 free in 2:08.60.

The UCLA men’s and women’s cross-country teams will compete in the Pac-10 Conference championships Monday at Stanford.

Bruin senior Jerry Marsh is in good shape after re-injuring his right knee in the Oct. 13 Arizona Invitational, and UCLA senior Polly Plumer, top runner for her team last year, will compete in her first meet this season after abdominal surgery last summer. Plumer will team with freshman Laurie Chapman to lead the Lady Bruins.

UCLA senior Mark Junkerman is having an outstanding season. Junkerman took firsts in the UCLA All-Comers and the Fresno State Invitational meets and was third at the Stanford Invitational.

The Pepperdine women’s and men’s basketball teams will play intrasquad games next week, the women at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Buena High School in Ventura and the men at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 6 at Ventura Junior College.

The Santa Monica College General Advisory Board will hold a mixer for former SMC football players on campus before the Corsairs face Allan Hancock in a homecoming game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Corsair Field.
