First Lady Nancy Reagan, chatting with talk show host Joan Rivers on her program Thursday night, said she was sure her children tried marijuana, but that she counted the First Family lucky compared to other families that suffer the effects of drug abuse.

Mrs. Reagan said that when she proposed anti-drug efforts to help young people during the 1960s “nobody wanted me to do it.”

Rivers asked the First Lady about her own children and drugs.

“I’m sure they tried marijuana. But we were lucky,” the First Lady replied.

She added that “people should be willing to take a position that this is morally wrong, that they should stand up and say this is wrong. . . . It doesn’t matter if it’s a chic Los Angeles party or a back alley, it’s wrong.”

Rivers asked Mrs. Reagan how she would like to be remembered, apart from being the President’s wife. The First Lady hesitated for a moment, then replied: “Oh dear, I guess for trying to make a difference with young people.”
