Friday’s Highlights : Canyon Wins 46th in Row, Ties Mark

Canyon High School of Canyon Country won a record-tying 46th straight game Friday night, defeating Quartz Hill, 45-13, in a Golden League contest at Canyon.

Canyon equaled the Southern Section record set by Temple City in 1969-73. Temple City won its final game in 1969, all of its games (and three 2-A titles) in 1970-72 and the first three games in 1973 before losing to St. Francis of La Canada, 10-0.

The Cowboys, ranked No. 3 in The Times’ poll, will try to break the record next Friday when they travel to Antelope Valley. The teams met in the Northwestern Conference final last year with Canyon winning, 9-7.

If Canyon, which has the longest current winning streak in the nation, defeats Antelope Valley, it will equal the State record of 47 set by Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa between 1972 and 1977.

Quarterback Ken Sollom led the Cowboy attack with 11 of 20 completions for 267 yards and 4 touchdowns. Sollom, the Southern Section’s passing yardage leader, now has thrown for 1,854 yards and 19 touchdowns in 8 games.

Canyon is 3-0 in the league and 8-0 overall. Quartz Hill is 0-3, 1-7.

Hart 49, Alhambra 7--Quarterback Jim Bonds of Hart completed 16 of 16 passes in the first half for 274 yards and 6 touchdowns covering 20, 10, 20, 12, 43 and 20 yards in the Foothill League game at East Los Angeles College. Bonds missed his first pass of second half when the ball went off Chris Hite’s hands. The Southern Section record for most consecutive completions is 20 set by La Canada’s Paul Gagliardi in 1978. Bonds finished with 20 of 24 for 316 yards and 6 touchdowns. Hite and David Lee each had three touchdown receptions. Hart is 3-0 in the league and 7-1 overall; Alhambra is 0-3, 0-7.

Kern Valley 29, Paraclete 0--In an upset, Kern Valley defeated the Southern Section’s leading offensive and defensive team. In its first 7 games Paraclete had outscored its opponents, 282-0. Kern Valley’s Ken Bushling rushed for 247 yards and 2 touchdowns in 22 carries as the Broncs dominated on offense as well as defense in the Desert-Inyo Large league game at Kern Valley. Bushling had touchdown runs of 70 yards and 1 yard, and Kern Valley had 346 yards in total offense to just 81 for Paraclete. Paraclete is 2-1 in the league and 7-1 overall; Kern Valley is 1-2, 4-4.

Santa Ana 34, Foothill 18--Robert Lee rushed for 225 yards and 4 touchdowns in 21 carries to lead Santa Ana to a Century League win at Tustin High. For Lee, a 6-foot, 210-pound junior tailback, it was the third consecutive game in which he has rushed for over 200 yards and scored 4 touchdowns. Lee scored on runs of 11, 14, 55 and 55 yards to help Santa Ana raise its league record to 3-0 and overall mark to 7-1. Foothill was the defending league champion but Santa Ana, which finished in third place last season, is the defending Southern Conference champion. Foothill is 2-1, 5-3.

Esperanza 49, El Dorado 24--Esperanza running back Mike Miscione rushed for 348 yards and 4 touchdowns in 24 carries in the Empire League game at Valencia High. The scores were on runs of 64, 47, 13 and 11 yards. He has 1,179 yards in 182 carries. Esperanza is 4-1-1 and 6-1-1; El Dorado is 2-4 and 2-7.

Harvard 52, Pater Noster 13--Running back Andy Bell gained 134 yards in 11 carries and had touchdown runs of 47, 18, 4 and 15 yards in the Santa Fe League game at Harvard. In eight games Bell has rushed for 1,215 yards and scored 16 touchdowns in 152 carries. Harvard’s Dominic Sandifer added a 59-yard field goal, the third longest in Southern Section history. Harvard is 4-0 in the league and 7-0 overall; Pater Noster is 0-4, 3-5. City

University 34, Venice 31--Paul Richardson scored with 32 seconds remaining on a 99-yard kickoff return after taking a handoff from Marc Rogers to give the Warriors the Pac-8 League win at University. Venice had just taken the lead 31-27 on Chris Staid’s 9-yard touchdown pass from Ernie Soto. Richardson, a wide receiver and an outside linebacker, also had two other touchdowns on a 55-yard pass play from Daryl Hobbs in the first quarter and a 55-yard fumble return in the third quarter. Staid, a wide receiver, also scored on touchdown passes of 12 and 14 yards. Hobbs completed 15 of 24 passes for 282 yards and 3 touchdowns. In seven games he has completed 39 of 83 passes for 791 yards and 10 touchdowns. University is 4-1 in the league and 6-1 overall; Venice is 2-2-1, 3-3-1.

Banning 36, Crenshaw 7--The Cougars opened the scoring in the first quarter on a 17-yard pass play from Jeffery Sullivan to Wayne Peters in the Pacific League game at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach. The touchdown broke Banning’s steak of 20 straight scoreless quarters and came after LaMonte Gaston’s 47-yard interception return. Banning’s Titus Tuiasosopo scored touchdonws on pass plays of 15 and 10 yards from Ed Kapu, who completed 8 of 15 passes for 142 yards and 4 touchdowns. Banning, The Times’ No. 1-ranked team, is 3-0 in the league and 7-0 overall.

Carson 30, Gardena 12--The “Calvin and Alvin Show” proved to be too much for Gardena. Calvin Holmes ran 16 times for 170 yards, including 53 for a touchdown, and Alvin Goree ran 10 times for 68 yards and a touchdown in the Pacific League game at Gardena. Defensive back Micheal Helms broke a Carson school single-game record by intercepting three passes. The Carson defense was led by linebacker Ulu Fanua, who had 14 tackles; linebacker Rick Tiedemann, who had 9 tackles and 2 sacks, and Richard Holt who had 5 tackles 2 sacks. Carson is 3-0 in the league and 7-0 overall; Gardena is 1-2, 1-6.
