Jones Nominated as Deputy Mayor

Share

Mayor Maureen O’Connor has nominated Councilman William Jones as the city’s next deputy mayor and elevated Councilman Mike Gotch to chairmanship of the Transportation and Land Use Committee, a post held by resigning Councilman Uvaldo Martinez.

Jones, who is up for re-election next year, is in line for the post, which is traditionally given to the person with seniority on the council who has not held the position.

Martinez was in line to become deputy mayor, but he will resign by Nov. 13 after pleading guilty to two felony counts of misusing a city credit card.

O’Connor reappointed council members Bill Cleator and Gloria McColl to their council committee chairmanships and chose Abbe Wolfsheimer to head a reconstituted Housing Commission, which will have five council members, including O’Connor, on its seven-member board. Cleator heads the Public Facilities and Recreation Committee, and McColl, the Public Services and Safety Committee.

Jones will succeed Councilman Ed Struiksma as deputy mayor, a position that carries little political power.
