NHL Roundup : Bossy Shows He’s Still Boss, Leads 7-4 Islander Win

Share

The Boss is back, and the New York Islanders are ready to roll.

The Boss, of course, is Mike Bossy, the high-scoring right wing.

Bossy, bothered throughout training camp by a back injury, played only a few minutes in three of the club’s first seven games. It appeared that his bid to score 50 or more goals for an unprecedented 10th consecutive season might be threatened. But in the last two games, it has been the Bossy of old. Thursday night, he had a goal and two assists.

He saved his best performance for Saturday night at Uniondale, N.Y., where he scored twice and assisted on another goal to lead the Islanders to a 7-4 victory over the Winnipeg Jets.

With four goals in five games, it’s obvious that Bossy hasn’t lost his scoring touch.

Brent Sutter also scored twice for the Islanders, his goals coming just three minutes apart in the second period. The first came with the Islanders short-handed and broke a 3-3 tie.

Philadelphia 4, Boston 2--The unhappiness of Bob Froese continues. The goaltender, who helped the Flyers win the Vezina Trophy for the stingiest goals-against record last season, wants to play.

But rookie Ron Hextall is keeping Froese on the bench. In this game at Philadelphia, Hextall improved his record to 7-2 and kept his goals-against average at 2.00.

Hextall engaged in a tight duel with Boston goaltender Doug Keans. They were even, 2-2, until the Flyers’ Tim Kerr deflected a shot by Doug Crossman into the net with 53 seconds left.

Pittsburgh 3, St. Louis 3--Mario Lemieux scored a power-play goal with 6:45 remaining at St. Louis to give the Penguins a hard-earned tie. It was Lemieux’s 16th goal of the season.

Lemieux has scored at least one point in each of the Penguins’ 12 games and has scored a goal in all but one of them to help the Penguins post an 8-3-1 record.

Bernie Federko scored one of the Blues goals’ and set a team career record with 293 goals.

Toronto 2, Detroit 0--Because No. 1 goaltender Ken Wregget has played so well for the Maple Leafs, Allan Bester has to be at his best when he gets an infrequent chance to play.

He was making only his second appearance this season in this game at Toronto and stopped 30 shots to earn his second career shutout.

Defenseman Borje Salming, playing only his third game of the season, had a goal and an assist to lead Toronto’s offense. With a 6-2-3 record, the Maple Leafs lead the Norris Division by four points.

Calgary 4, Washington 1--Steve Bozek scored two goals and assisted on another at Calgary to help the Flames end a four-game losing streak and stop the Capitals’ unbeaten string at five games.

Buffalo 3, New Jersey 1--Wilf Paiement scored twice at East Rutherford, N.J., as the Sabres shut down the Devils’ power play and ended a four-game losing streak.

Going into the game, the Devils had converted 9 of their last 15 power-play opportunities. But Jacques Cloutier stopped 23 shots and the Devils were 0 for 7 in power plays.

Quebec 2, Hartford 2--Brend Ashton scored his 10th goal in 12 games for the Nordiques, connecting early in the second period at Hartford, and it turned out to be the last goal of the tie.
