Democratic Gov. Richard Celeste took a substantial lead in early returns against a comeback bid by Republican James A. Rhodes, who sought to regain his old office for an unprecedented fifth, four-year term.

Sen. John Glenn, a Democrat, was projected a winner, holding onto his Senate seat for a third term against a challenge from Republican Rep. Thomas Kindness.

Celeste, 48, was seeking his second term. Rhodes, 77, won a three-way Republican primary in May.
