SPRINGFIELD — Incomplete returns gave Republican Gov. James R. Thompson a repeat victory over third-party nominee Adlai Stevenson III, 67% to 33%.
Stevenson’s uphill struggle began with the March primary when two followers of Lyndon H. LaRouche Jr. won spots on the Democratic ticket. Declaring himself unwilling to run with the LaRouche candidates, he formed the Solidarity Party but his candidacy never recovered.
In the Senate race, Democrat incumbent Alan J. Dixon was easily reelected with 70% of the vote to Republican state Rep. Judy Koehler’s 29%.
In House races, both parties were winning two seats each.
