The Nation : A Day in the Hospital: $212
Spending one day in a typical American hospital room cost $212 last year, with California the most expensive state to be hospitalized in and Mississippi the least costly. Hospital room charges jumped nearly 70% over five years, on average, from a 1980 cost of $127 a day, according to statistics published by the Census Bureau. The figures were drawn from data compiled by the Health Insurance Assn. of America and the American Hospital Assn. The health insurance association’s 1985 study of hospital room charges found that the average daily cost was $281 in California.
