Rep. Tim Wirth claimed the seat of retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Hart and state Treasurer Roy Romer won the governor’s race as Democrats took two major victories in Colorado.
Wirth defeated Republican Rep. Ken Kramer, a conservative from Colorado Springs whose candidacy received a boost last week with a visit from President Reagan. It was the second visit by Reagan to the state in as many months.
With 75% of the vote counted, Wirth had 387,030 or 51% of the vote to Kramer’s 370,205 or 49%.
Romer took an easy victory in the race to succeed Democratic Gov. Richard Lamm. With 75% of the vote in, Romer had 451,089 votes or 59%. Republican state Senate President Ted Strickland had 311,275 or 41% of the vote.
