DOVER — Democratic Rep. Thomas R. Carper easily won a third term as Delaware’s lone congressman, defeating political newcomer Thomas S. Neuberger.
Carper, 39, ran on his record, saying voters wanted a congressman who was “accessible, independent and effective.”
Neuberger, 39, a lawyer, touted his courtroom record of supporting civil rights for blacks and women. But he said he would not support legislation to categorize homosexuals as a minority group.
With 90% of the votes reported, Carper had 93,185 votes or 65% to Neuberger’s 48,210, or 35%.
Carper was first elected in 1982 by defeating three-term Republican incumbent Thomas Evans. In 1984, Carper defeated Elise du Pont, wife of 1988 Republican presidential contender and former Gov. Pierre S. du Pont IV.
