TUCSON — Republican Evan Mecham took a slim lead over Democrat Carolyn Warner and Independent Bill Schulz in the race to succeed retiring Gov. Bruce Babbitt. Mecham had 39% of the vote to Warner’s 35% and Schulz’s 26%. A majority vote is not needed for election.
In the race to succeed retiring Republican Sen. Barry Goldwater, Rep. John S. McCain III, a former Vietnam prisoner of war, defeated Democrat Richard F. Kimball, 57% to 43%.
Democrats won one House seat and Republicans won four.
