RALEIGH — Former Democratic Gov. Terry Sanford wrested a Senate seat from the GOP by defeating Sen. James Broyhill, who had been appointed to the Senate this summer following the suicide of Republican John East.
With 91% of the vote counted, Sanford had 52% of the vote and Broyhill had 48%.
