ST. PAUL — Gov. Rudy Perpich, the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party incumbent, defeated Independent-Republican Cal Ludeman, 57% to 43%, to stay in office.
Harold Stassen, a former three-term governor and six-time unsuccessful GOP candidate for President, was soundly defeated in a congressional race.
Stassen, 79, was overwhelmed by Rep. Bruce Vento, a Democrat, who easily won a sixth term. Stassen, who was nominated for the race unopposed, was last elected to an office in 1942.
In other House races, Democrats took six seats and Republicans one. One race was undecided.
