United Auto Workers President Owen Bieber said today that the national election results show that “the spell cast by the Great Mesmerizer and his many acolytes has been decisively broken.”

Bieber, repeating criticisms that deficits in both the budget and in trade “spell economic trouble ahead,” said Tuesday’s vote sent “a positive signal that the American people want action--not rhetoric--to deal with pressing economic and other challenges.”

The president of the 1.15-million-member union said Americans have had enough of “blue smoke and mirrors.”

He said Americans also can see that instead of a victory at last month’s superpower summit talks in Iceland there “was actually a colossal and dangerous failure.”
