Republican Evan Mecham defeated Democrat Carolyn Warner and independent Bill Schulz in the race to succeed retiring Gov. Bruce Babbitt. Mecham, an auto dealer, won 40% of the vote to Warner’s 34% and Schulz’s 26%. A majority vote was not needed for election.

In the race to succeed retiring Republican Sen. Barry Goldwater, Rep. John S. McCain III, a former Vietnam prisoner of war, defeated Democrat Richard F. Kimball, 60% to 40%.

Democrats won one House seat and Republicans won four.
