A United Airlines jetliner carrying 203 people cut short its flight from Shanghai to Tokyo on Tuesday, landing in Osaka because of mechanical trouble, a Transport Ministry official said.

There were no reports of damage or injuries to the 192 passengers and 11 crew aboard the three-engine Lockheed L-1011.

The official said United Airlines Flight 858 reported to a control tower in Fukuoka in southern Japan that it wanted to divert to Osaka, in western Japan, because the right side of the aircraft’s leading-edge flaps did not retract after takeoff, causing the plane to use more fuel than usual. The jet had been scheduled to go on from Tokyo to San Francisco.
