A week ago, Lincoln was the victim of the biggest upset of the season in San Diego County high school football . . . a 21-20 loss to Hoover.

Lincoln bounced back this week to beat Crawford, 26-3, at Mesa College and turn first place in the City Central League over to . . .

Guess who?

Hoover.

Crawford’s loss broke a tie for first place with Hoover (3-0), which plays Christian at Valley Stadium at 7:30 tonight.

Lincoln is 3-1 in league play and 8-1 overall, and Crawford is 3-1 and 5-4. Though now tied for second with Crawford, Lincoln would have a playoff advantage should these teams remain tied.

Lincoln quarterback Keith Mitchell threw a 67-yard pass to Patrick Rowe for a 6-0 lead. For the game, Mitchell completed 7 of 17 passes for 168 yards and Rowe had 3 catches for 95 yards.

Crawford’s Dan Murphy kicked a 30-yard field goal early in the second quarter to cut Lincoln’s lead to 7-3.

With 7:15 to play in the third quarter, Lincoln running back Kevin Key, who had 41 yards in 6 carries, ran 17 yards for a touchdown to give Lincoln a 12-3 lead.

On Lincoln’s next possession, Marcus Hopkins (98 yards in 10 carries) scored on a 5-yard run to increase Lincoln’s lead to 19-3. He added another five-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter to wrap up the scoring.
