POOR ‘HARVEST’ FOR LATINOS

Share

As a New Mexican, I am once again furious over the use of “Chicano” in describing New Mexicans.

We are of Hispanic origin; our ancestors coming from Spain with Coronado and other conquistadors. Our yearly fiestas celebrate the conquistadors and our affiliation with Spain.

I have nothing in common with Mexicans, Chicanos or La Raza except speaking Spanish.

We are just like every other American whose ancestors came from Europe. Some settled in Plymouth, Mass.; mine settled in New Mexico. My ancestors are every bit as American as George Washington was. American with a very Spanish--not Mexican--heritage.
