Secretary of State George P. Shultz could resign over the United States’ reported secret involvement in arms shipments to Iran, aides to Shultz were quoted as saying in today’s editions of The New York Times.

The State Department had opposed covert contacts with Iran and was deliberately denied information about the matter, the newspaper said, citing unidentified Administration officials.

One aide was quoted as saying, “If the secretary is going to resign over something, this would be it,” but the aide said he did not know what Shultz intended to do.

White House and State Department spokesmen refused to comment on the newspaper report.
