The governing body of men’s professional tennis has announced strict new penalties for players who persistently flout the rules.

At present, any player who has built up fines of $7,500 over 12 months becomes suspended, subject to appeal, for 42 days. This figure is reduced by half if the offender stays clear not only of sanctioned grand prix events but also of exhibition matches.

The revised legislation, introduced by the Men’s International Professional Tennis Council, becomes effective starting Jan. 1.

From that date, the penalty is an additional, automatic $10,000 fine, instead of a suspension. If the same player then accrues an additional $7,500 in fines, he will not only have to forfeit $10,000 more, but also will be banned for two months.
