Randolph Shoots Course-Record 64 to Lead Regional

Sam Randolph of Santa Barbara shot a course-record 64 Tuesday to take a four-stroke lead after the first round of PGA tour regional qualifying at Rio Bravo Resort.

Randolph’s 8-under-par round put him in front of Jay Don Blake of St. George, Utah, who shot a 68 to open the 72-hole event.

At 69 were Dennis Paulson of Costa Mesa; Mike Miles of Cypress; Howie Johnson of Huntington Beach; Brad Gillman of Olympia Fields, Ill.; Jim Carter of Mesa, Ariz., and Ed Dougherty of Linwood, Pa.

Peter Oosterhuis of Santa Barbara and Victor Regalado of Bonita, Calif, were among golfers at 70.

The low 22 scorers in the regional tournament, which runs through Friday, will advance to the final qualifying Dec. 3-8 in La Quinta.
