Extremely light winds near the tip of Baja California have stalled at least half of the 38 boats in the Los Angeles Yacht Club’s race to Cabo San Lucas. Many are still about 100 miles from the finish.
As of 6 p.m. Friday, a total of 19 boats had drifted across the finish line. Dick Pennington’s Peterson-66 sloop Cheetah was first to finish Thursday and saved her handicap time for a sweep in the Performance Handicap Racing Fleet, scoring first overall and first in Class A.
Swiftsure III, skippered by John Reynolds of Los Angeles Yacht Club, finished an hour behind Cheetah but was first to finish in the International Offshore Rule division, winning top honors in fleet and class.
Boats still at sea Friday night with distances to go:
PHRF--Revenge, 97 miles; Camelot, 122; Apparition, 100; Maryjane, 180; Coureur, 138; Pericus, 51; Typhoon, 90; Timber Wolf, 101; Millenium Falcon, 205; Nero, 103; Revelation, 187.
