Smuggler Abandons 27 Chinese Children in Drifting Speedboat
Twenty-seven Chinese children were found aboard a speedboat drifting off Hong Kong Friday after they were abandoned by smugglers, police said.
They said the children, 23 girls and four boys aged 8 to 14, were brought in from China’s southern Fujian Province by smugglers who earlier eluded a chase by police patrol vessels.
Children smuggled into the British colony from China usually have relatives here, some of them legal residents. Officials said the children would be treated as illegal immigrants and sent back to China.
