Final arguments begin today in the San Francisco retrial of former Peoples Temple member Larry Layton, charged with the murder of Rep. Leo Ryan and four others and with the mass suicide of more than 900 of the cult’s members in Jonestown, Guyana. Layton, 41, is accused of conspiring with the Rev. James Jones and others to kill the San Francisco area congressman and diplomat Richard Dwyer as the Ryan party attempted to leave Jonestown after an investigative visit. Dwyer was seriously wounded.
