New U.S. Law on Immigration

Share

It is not often that I agree with your editorial writers, but in the case of Frank del Olmo I do for the most part. Indeed now that the immigration bill has been passed, it is time to properly implement it. American citizens are fed up, and if this one doesn’t work, then the pressure will be applied full force for a more stringent law.

Where I disagree is with the same cliche criticisms of the “la migra” or as he put it, “the good old INS.” They are undermanned, underfunded, underequipped and unappreciated because of the consistent bad press The Times has given them.

During a recent trip to the border, I observed them at work, interviewed them at length, and the public should know they perform a thankless job quite well under the difficult circumstances. I would not do it for any salary.
