NATO Panel OKs Terrorism Statement
Lawmakers from NATO countries Tuesday issued a resolution calling on member governments not to negotiate with “terrorists, their backers or protectors.”
The NATO Assembly, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s inter-parliamentary group, passed the resolution because of “recent developments between the United States and Iran,” a British delegate said.
The assembly also agreed to set up a panel to study the effects of international terrorism on the alliance.
President Reagan last week confirmed secret contacts with Iran and arms shipments to the country. The developments led to speculation that the United States agreed to the shipments in a deal swapping arms for American hostages held in Lebanon by pro-Iranian groups.
