Newly elected Cook County Circuit Judge Joseph E. McDermott was found in contempt of court and jailed Tuesday for failing to testify before a grand jury in the Operation Greylord investigation of corruption in the county court system.

U.S. District Judge John Grady found McDermott, elected without opposition on Nov. 4, in civil contempt and ordered him jailed. McDermott refused to testify about payoffs he allegedly made to fix drunken-driving cases while he was an attorney in Traffic Court.
