55-M.P.H. Speed Limit

O’Neill may be correct, but he fails to touch on what I perceive to be the major problem on freeways today.

The problem, as I perceive it, is slower traffic in the faster lanes of the freeway. I drive the Southern California system extensively. I would prefer to drive in one of the two fast lanes, keeping up with traffic and not changing lanes until within a mile or two of my destination.

Invariably, I end up behind someone who feels he is “within the law or above the law” doing 50 m.p.h. to 55 m.p.h. without another vehicle within 50 or more car lengths in front of him. All this time, traffic is passing rapidly by him much like water around an obstruction in a river. Soon, frustrated by the driver oblivious to anything behind him, I change the lanes in order to relieve the building frustration that makes “some” people act irrationally.

Occasionally you see signs posted along our highways and freeways that state, “Slower traffic keep right.” This sign represents both a courtesy and a traffic law. To those drivers who must travel slower than the flow of traffic around them, move over to the right. Maybe slow is right, but just maybe “right” refers to the far right lane. P.S. Don’t forget to use your turn signals.
