San Diego
San Diego State University has established its first endowed teaching position funded in part by faculty and staff donations, a spokeswoman said Wednesday.
An 11-month campaign to raise $250,000 culminated in the creation of the Rollin and Caroline Eckis chair in seismology, spokeswoman Louise Snider said. Faculty and staff members contributed $83,500 as part of SDSU’s Endowed Chair Fund for Academic Excellence, Snider said.
The fund’s goal is to endow a teaching position in each of SDSU’s seven colleges. The chair in seismology is in the College of Sciences.
Rollin Eckis, retired executive vice president and vice chairman of ARCO oil company, donated $50,000 toward the creation of the teaching position. His gift was matched by ARCO.
A search is under way for a professor to fill the chair.
