Local News in Brief : 2 Incumbents Named by Las Virgenes Board

Adispute over appointment of two Las Virgenes Municipal Water District directors has ended with two incumbents being named to new four-year terms by Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich.

Ann Dorgelo and Harold Helsley were quietly appointed to new terms on Tuesday in an action taken without notice. They will be sworn in Jan. 13, along with newly elected director Glen Peterson, a water district spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Las Virgenes officials had asked Antonovich two months ago to appoint Helsley and Dorgelo after county elections officials canceled elections in both divisions.

Helsley’s was called off after officials discovered that neither he nor his opponent collected the proper number of signatures on candidate filing papers. Dorgelo’s was canceled after officials found that her opponent lacked the proper number of signatures to qualify as a candidate.

When Antonovich failed to act on the appointments before Election Day, water district officials asked state Atty. Gen. John Van de Kamp for a ruling on whether the supervisor had violated state law.

The water district spokeswoman said Wednesday that the water district has dropped its protest to Van de Kamp.
