Quarterback Chris Chandler threw four touchdown passes, including three to Brian Slater, and kicker Jeff Jaeger set an NCAA career record for field goals as 12th-ranked Washington defeated Washington State, 44-23, in the Apple Cup game Saturday.

Jaeger kicked three field goals to push his four-year total to 80, one more than the mark set last year by UCLA’s John Lee. The record- breaking kick was a 27-yarder with 3:16 left.

The Sun Bowl-bound Huskies, 8-2-1 overall, finished the regular season with a 5-2-1 Pacific 10 record. Washington State ended the year 3-7-1 and 2-6-1, the tie coming against Rose Bowl-bound Arizona State.

Sophomore tailback Vince Weathersby rushed for 177 yards in 25 carries as the Huskies scored 27 straight points to overturn an early 10-7 Washington State lead.

Washington will play either Alabama or LSU in the Dec. 25 Sun Bowl at El Paso, Tex.

Jaeger, a senior from Kent, Wash., who began his college career as a walk-on, said: “I feel really good, but seven extra points would have been OK, because with everything they put us through the last couple of years, we just wanted to get the win.”

The Cougars have beaten the Huskies three times since 1982.

The kicker got the chance for the record boot after Washington recovered an onside kick by Washington State and drove to the Cougar 11.

The record kick gave Washington a 44-23 lead, and Jaeger was mobbed by his teammates.

Jaeger had 14 points in the game, counting five PATs, moving him into second place on the NCAA scoring list with 358 points. Luis Zendejas scored 368 points for Arizona State in 1981-84.

The Huskies’ leading receiver, senior Lonzell Hill, suffered a dislocated left elbow after his third reception late in the second quarter and may miss the Sun Bowl.

Chandler completed 15 of 20 passes for 204 yards and was not intercepted. He raised his Pac-10 leading touchdown pass total to 20. The junior quarterback has thrown for 1,994 yards in his first complete season as a starter.
