Kenny Drummond, taking advantage of the NCAA’s new three-point rule, made his fourth such shot of the game with 14 seconds remaining Saturday to help North Carolina State score an 86-84 upset victory over Navy in the Hall of Fame Tipoff game at Springfield, Mass.

Drummond, a 5-foot 10-inch guard who transferred from Sacramento City College, and forward Bennie Bolton each scored 20 points to lead the Wolfpack. David Robinson, Navy’s 6-11 center, led all scorers with 36 points, 26 in the second half.

“I’m wide open. There’s nobody there,” Drummond said. “It’s like a layup. I like that shot a whole lot.”

The Wolfpack, who converted 10 of 20 shots from the 19-foot 9-inch three-point line, scored 8 of the game’s final 9 points.

“Robinson’s the reason we went outside,” Wolfpack Coach Jim Valvano said. “And we were living and dying with the outside shot.”

Doug Wojcik gave Navy an 83-78 lead with 2:28 left on a three-point basket before the Wolfpack rallied.

Memphis State 70, Cleveland State 66--Vincent Askew scored 20 points and pulled down 11 rebounds as the Tigers won their first-round game in the preseason National Invitation Tournament at Memphis.

The victory was the first for Memphis State’s new coach, Larry Finch, who replaced Dana Kirk when Kirk was fired last September.
