Newport Beach : Comment Sought on Bike-Pedestrian Bridge

Share

The U.S. Coast Guard is soliciting public comments regarding a proposed bicycle and pedestrian bridge planned to span the Newport Island channel near the Newport Boulevard bridge.

The bridge would be prefabricated and would be designed to be removable, according to Coast Guard Capt. Terry Lucas, head of the 11th Coast Guard District.

The bicycle and pedestrian pathway would span about 127 feet and have a vertical clearance of 10 feet above the mean high water line, as does the existing highway bridge.

Lucas said the project would affect no parklands, wildlife refuges or historic properties, nor would it diminish navigational clearance.

Written comments on the proposal should be sent by Dec. 15 to the office of the commander, 11th Coast Guard District, 400 Oceangate, Long Beach 90822.
