A 21-year-old man suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol was injured Saturday night when he drove a stolen car into the path of a Carlsbad Police cruiser that was pursuing a speeding vehicle, the California Highway Patrol reported. Patrick Rotchford, 21, was listed in good condition at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla on Sunday, where he is under custody, a hospital spokeswoman said.

According to a CHP spokeswoman, Carlsbad Police Officer Alan Edwards was pursuing a speeder southbound on Carlsbad Boulevard at 10:30 p.m. Saturday when the accident occurred. Rotchford, who was northbound on Carlsbad Boulevard was trying to turn left on Maple Street when he was hit broadside by Edwards’ patrol car, the spokeswoman said. Edwards, 34, suffered minor injuries and was treated at Tri-City Hospital in Oceanside and released.
