East German border guards sprayed a man with at least 30 submachine-gun rounds today as he was about to jump from the Berlin Wall into the Western sector, apparently killing him, West Berlin police reported.

The shooting prompted such a strong reaction of disgust from one East German border guard that he was disarmed and arrested by another guard, a police spokesman said.

The West German Cabinet, meeting in Bonn, denounced the shooting as a “bloody deed” and said it rendered worthless the East German government’s statements on human rights.

Western residents near the wall told police they heard shouts and a call, “Halt, stay where you are,” about 1:30 a.m. at the border of the French sector’s suburban Frohnau district and East Germany.

Scaled Wall With Ladder

They said the man used a ladder to climb the 10-foot-high wall but when he reached the top, guards fired 30 to 50 rounds from their submachine guns. He fell, covered with blood, back into Eastern territory, they said.

“He showed no sign of life,” the police spokesman said. “A West Berliner peering through a crack in the wall saw on the ground a young man in a white shirt covered with blood.”

The West Berliner reported one of the guards looked at the man and said, “I got you, you pig.”

Another guard was so dismayed by the sight that he threw his hat on the ground and shouted an obscenity, according to the witness. The first guard then took him into custody, the witness said.

Nine Others Escape

Police said nine other refugees, two East Germans and seven Czechoslovakians, fled to the West without incident in separate weekend escapes.

Hans-Joachim Schnitzler, 36, escaped in an inflatable dinghy in the Baltic Sea and was picked up by a West German ship. Schnitzler was identified as the nephew of an East German television commentator known for his strident attacks on the West.
