Fullerton Police Chief Martin Hairabedian Monday was named to the North Orange County Municipal Court bench by Gov. George Deukmejian.

Hairabedian said that he was looking forward to becoming a judge and that he would make his resignation as police chief effective “sometime after the beginning of the year” to give city officials time to consider his replacement.

A former Los Angeles Police Department captain, Hairabedian has been chief in Fullerton since 1977. He also has maintained a part-time law practice since 1977.

Hairabedian earned a law degree from South Bay University in 1976.

Municipal Court judges earn $74,432 annually.

On Oct. 30, Deukmejian named Hairabedian to the Commission on Police Officer Standards and Training. He said he still intends to serve on the commission if his appointment is confirmed by the state Senate.
