Nearly three of four Americans favor withdrawing life support from hopelessly ill patients under certain conditions, a poll sponsored by the American Medical Assn. indicated. The survey found 73% who agreed with the option of “withdrawing life-support systems, including food and water, from hopelessly ill or irreversibly comatose patients if they or their family request it.” Only 15% opposed the option, and 12% said they were not sure.
