Davey Johnson, manager of the World Series champion New York Mets, said he will not attend baseball’s winter meetings next month and will not function in any managerial capacity until his contract is renegotiated, Newsday reported.

The newspaper also said that the Mets have withdrawn their offer to sign third baseman Ray Knight, winner of the Most Valuable Player award in New York’s 1986 World Series victory over the Boston Red Sox.

Johnson has two years remaining on a $225,000-a-year contract. But after the World Series, he disclosed that the agreement contained a clause that obligated the club to increase his salary if the manager of the New York Yankees received an increase. A short time later, Yankee Manager Lou Piniella was given a two-year contract worth more than $600,000.
