CBS Misses the Winning Field Goal
In an embarrassing mistake, CBS was showing its national audience a commercial Saturday while Notre Dame’s John Carney was kicking his game-winning field goal against USC.
The field goal was shown on tape after the commercial.
A network spokesman said an extra 60 seconds were handed over to the affiliates and that nothing could be done to cut back to the game.
An attempt was made by CBS to lengthen the timeout, but the officials didn’t grant it, the spokesman said.
No explanation was given by the announcing team of Verne Lundquist, Pat Haden and Ara Parseghian before CBS went off the air.
