James Garner and James Woods are cast as brothers in “Promise,” a “Hallmark Hall of Fame” drama that will be shown on CBS Dec. 14. Garner plays a carefree bachelor whose life changes dramatically when his mother dies and he takes responsibility for his schizophrenic sibling (Woods). Piper Laurie also stars as a friend of Garner’s.

Ed Marinaro, Ken Olin, Max Gail and Robert Rusler have the leading roles in “Single Men,” a new TV movie for ABC about guys who visit a singles bar and, as the network puts it, “learn unexpected lessons about life and love.” On the distaff side of the cast are Belinda Bauer, Tracy Nelson and Janet Margolin.

Not surprisingly, “Miami Vice” has built an episode around a song written by its star, Don Johnson. The song is “Streetwise,” and the show will be broadcast on NBC later this season. That installment also will feature an appearance by Whoopi Goldberg, who appeared last season on “Moonlighting.” . . . Another “Miami Vice” episode will have boxers Mark Breland and Randall (Tex) Cobb as guests.

John Forsythe of “Dynasty,” who hosted a prime-time special for ABC recently, will be doing the same for NBC Dec. 20. The program is “Christmas in Washington,” the fifth consecutive year that NBC has broadcast a holiday musical program from the nation’s capital. Among the performers will be Mac Davis, Sandi Patti, the U.S. Naval Academy Glee Club and the Shiloh Baptist Church Choir of Washington.
